Connected product regulations
Regulations on this page:
GS1 Sunrise 2027 (2D at POS)
What is it?
Global shift to 2D codes (e.g., QR/Data Matrix) readable at point-of-sale/point-of-care alongside 1D barcodes.
When will it take effect?
Industry target: all retailers can scan 2D by end of 2027. Transition is already underway globally.
What do I need to do?
- Plan 2D migration (symbology, GTIN-in-2D, data strategy).
- Upgrade print/verify/scan, POS integration, and data governance.
- Align artwork and pack hierarchies to support dual coding during transition.
How can CEC help?
We blueprint and run your 2D migration—specs, vendor onboarding, QA, and analytics—via Mi-View360™.
EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) & Digital Product Passport (DPP)
What is it?
Framework enabling product-specific rules (incl. Digital Product Passports) to disclose verified sustainability data across categories (e.g., textiles, furniture, tyres; plus key materials).
When will it take effect?
ESPR entered into force July 18, 2024; the first ESPR Working Plan published April 16, 2025 sets priorities and timing for DPP roll-outs by category.
What do I need to do?
- Map data sources for DPP (materials, repairability, recyclability, provenance).
- Prepare identifiers (often QR) and governance for verified product truth.
How can CEC help?
We design your DPP data model, connect systems, and deliver consumer-ready, AI-safe experiences triggered from pack codes.
EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
What is it?
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 replacing the prior directive; sets recyclability, reuse, and labelling/digital information rules.
When will it take effect?
Adopted Dec 19, 2024; published Jan 22, 2025. Key milestones include recyclability design obligations by 2030/2035(subject to delegated acts) and digital labelling (e.g., QR) from 2027 linking to structured environmental info.
What do I need to do?
- Update pack specs for recyclability targets.
- Plan digital identifiers and content (composition, recyclability, reuse).
- Harmonise on-pack and digital labels to the final implementing specs.
How can CEC help?
We create a PPWR-ready labelling and data roadmap, implement QR/AQR at scale, and centralise updates in Mi-View360™.
GS1 Digital Link (not law, but essential)
What is it?
The standard that lets one code do many jobs (retail, consumer, accessibility, AI).
When will it take effect?
Relevant now; becomes unavoidable as 2D volumes rise 2026–2029.
What do I need to do?
- Move from “QR to random URL” to “QR to structured, standards-based links”.
How can CEC help?
Mi-View360™ automatically builds the right linkset and keeps it in sync across brands, markets and suppliers.
